The Co-operative Councils’ Innovation Network (CCIN) has published a briefing with regards to the recent Cabinet Statement: Rewiring the State to highlight the implications for place-based leadership, public service integration, stronger local accountability and the future of local government reorganisation.
The briefing acknowledges that many CCIN members are already taking this direction of travel: more decisions, resources and responsibility expected to sit closer to the people and places affected by them. The relevance for cooperative councils is how this highlights a strong opportunity to build on existing activities and projects in community wealth building, social value, co-production, neighbourhood working, and local economic development.
At the same time, 28 Leaders from the co-operative movement have written to the Prime Minister setting out how co-operatives can help deliver good growth, secure the essentials people rely on, empower communities and support the UK’s reindustrialisation. Cllr Paul Cassidy, in his role as Interim Chair of CCIN, is one of the signatories to a letter that makes the case for stronger support, finance and legislation to unlock the full potential of the co-operative economy.
Taken together, these two pieces underline the practical value of co-operative approaches at a moment when councils are being asked to think differently about place, power and economic growth. They also reinforce the role of CCIN as a working network for members to share practice, test ideas and build the evidence base for future change
CCIN’s network offers a range of routes for member councils to engage, including Officer Network meetings, Regular events and activities including our Annual AGM and Conference, policy projects, case studies, toolkits and publications. These are all helping members to connect current practice with the next phase of national policy and to learn from one another across the network
CCIN is always keen to hear from member councils and to support the development of further case studies, so that good practice continues to travel across the network.
