CCIN Members’ Update – May 2022

  • 3rd May 2022

Welcome to the May edition of Update

Councillor Sharon Taylor OBE

Dear Member

Welcome to the May edition of Update

There are currently eight active Policy Lab and Prototype projects scheduled to finish over the coming year; all are seeking cooperative policy solutions to local government challenges.  And we’re now looking for new projects to fund, and welcome bids from across the Network. The project ideas under consideration are:

  1. Covid-19 Recovery
  2. Sharing data with 3rd Sector organisations
  3. Tackling Inequality
  4. Engaging Communities in Local Democracy
  5. Cooperative Approaches to Levelling-up
  6. Building community power by opening up access to the cooperative economy
  7. CCIN Study visit to Mondragon
  8. Arts & Culture for social cohesion
  9. Bringing our Values and Principles to life

The Officer Call on 3rd May will discuss each of these ideas in detail and propose who might lead on each Bid ahead of the deadline on 1st June.  For an invitation to join that call, please email Mahmuda Khanom. Find out more about the application process here.

A few barriers to developing the cooperative economy will be the same across the country, and others will be specific to a particular area.  We are fortunate to have some leaders and several councils in the Network leading the way in trying innovative ways to grow their local cooperative economy and overcome some of the challenges.  Whatever our location, we are all seeking to create more equitable economies for our local communities so that they can grow and prosper.  In this edition, we spotlight resources to develop the coop economy.

Working with the Co-operative College, we have developed two certified training programmes – an Induction and Key Themes for Co-operative Councils.  We recommend that councillors and officers undertake both programmes to get the most out of your membership.  Find out more here.

Finally, to everyone standing for Election on Thursday, 5 May, I wish you well.

I hope that you enjoy this Member Update.

Stay safe.

Sharon
