About the event

When Michael Bloomberg was Mayor of New York, he inherited a lot of tricky entrenched issues especially around crime and lack of aspiration. He realised that it was the citizens of New York who were the solution. He said ”I had a million New Yorkers volunteering but they were doing a million different things. Imagine what would happen if the city asked them to concentrate on 1 or 2”. He did exactly that and within 2 years, crime reduced substantially and aspiration rose amongst the poorest communities. The Cities of Service model was born and is now used in almost 300 cities across the globe.

Cities of Service has made a huge difference in Plymouth and cities like Plymouth across the U.S and U.K. This event will showcase how this has been done in Plymouth, Bristol, York and the USA. It will also give delegates the opportunity to find out more about Crowdfund Plymouth, our multi award winning initiative including the Engaged Cities Award 2019 from Cities of Service. Plymouth will also be revealing, for the first time, the initiative it is launching, in part using the Engaged City Award money.

The event will start with a welcome dinner in the evening followed by the Policy Lab the following day involving keynote speakers from the U.S and the U.K who are all using the Cities of Service model to make a difference in the place they care about. The whole event will be held at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel in Plymouth and dinner and overnight stay will be provided on the first evening and breakfast and lunch will be provided on day 2. Unfortunately, we cannot pay for travel to and from Plymouth.

Thanks to funding from CCIN we have 25 free delegate spaces for Full and Associate Members – these will be allocated on a first come, first served basis (limited to one per member). Additional delegates from Full, Associate, and Affiliate Members will cost £215 each. Non-members are welcome to attend at a cost of £275 per person.
