This morning, 13 July 2020, we launched our report: ‘Co-operatives Unleashed: from the Grassroots’ which was funded through the CCIN’s Policy Lab programme and delivered by the Economic Development Team at Plymouth City Council, with case studies and support from across the Network and the sector.

Speakers were Steve Reed OBE, MP Shadow Communities & Local Govt Secretary, who as CCIN Honorary President was instrumental in establishing the CCIN.  Network Chair Cllr Sharon Taylor OBE and Leader of Stevenage Borough Council, outlined why councils should support cooperative development. The report was introduced by Anna Peachey, Economic Development Lead at Plymouth City Council and Dr Cilla Ross, Principal of the Cooperative College, talked about the important role of education in cooperative development. Councillor Chris Penberthy, chair of the CCIN Values & Principles Board and Cooperative Lead at Plymouth City Council, who produced the report, chaired the event.

The report sets out practical ways for councils to encourage and enable the start-up and growth of businesses that adhere to Co-operative Values and Principles which enable any business to be fairer, more democratic and accountable to their members and their communities. Councils have a key role to play in supporting co-operatives, especially when it comes to giving local communities ownership over local assets and services.
